About the Human Resources Department
The City of Aiken Human Resources Department provides comprehensive human resource
services to City of Aiken employees and the public. The Human Resources Department
works closely with department directors, managers, and supervisors in addition to
assisting all employees as needed. The Human Resources Department maintains a unique
and effective relationship with City employees in every department. The Human Resources
Department assists employees by working on issues in the following areas:
benefits, compensation, employee relations, organizational development, policy development,
recruitment, and selection.
The Human Resources Department works closely with the South Carolina Employment
Security Commission on job recruitment and job advertisements. Applications
for City employment are taken at the South Carolina Employment Security Office at
1571 Richland Avenue; SE. Out of town applicants may send resumes for current opened
positions to City of Aiken Human Resources P.O. Box 1177, Aiken SC 29802.
The Human Resources Department maintains a pay for performance compensation plan
for its employees. The City’s pay for performance program is designed to recognize
quality performance in City employees. The amount of yearly pay increase,
other than cost of living, each employee receives is determined by their annual
performance evaluation. This system ensures City merit increase funds are
used effectively and that they motivate employees to continually improve performance
and offer the best possible service to the citizens of Aiken.
Training is vital to the successful operation of the City of Aiken. The Human
Resources Department assists other departments in providing necessary employee training.
The Human Resources Department also helps facilitate the City’s Character Initiative
by assisting in making character instruction available to City of Aiken employees.
These sessions are also open to the public to be enjoyed by anyone interested in
Aiken’s Character Initiative and character education.
The Human Resources Department works to ensure that City of Aiken salaries are competitive.
The department annually conducts a number of salary surveys on various positions
as a means to monitor the competitiveness of the City’s pay plan. This and
the City of Aiken’s excellent benefits package have had a positive and profound
effect on the retention of our employees. The most recent statistics on the
City’s voluntary turn over rate was at 8% for full-time and regular part-time employees.
It is a goal of the Human Resources Department to continue to work on issues related
to the retention and recruitment of quality customer oriented employees by working
on compensation, benefits, and an overall positive work environment for all City
employees. Our goal is to be a most attractive employer for current and future employees
and in doing so maintain a high level of service to the citizens of Aiken.
